Chapter One: Sonnet 17
If I could write the beauty of your eyes, and in fresh numbers number all your
graces,
The age to come would say, “This poet lies: such beauty ne’er touched earthly
faces.”

“Joonie-hyung~~”
Min-Joon turned over and buried his face in his pillow. Ignoring his younger
brother’s call. He wasn’t a morning person and Dae-Eun was. It made for an
interesting childhood. Especially since Dae-Eun seemed to rise with the birds
and thought everyone else should do the same.
“Hyung~~” Dae-Eun repeated as the floorboards gave way to his footsteps.
Min-Joon groaned and tried desperately to bury his face deeper into the pillow.
“Joonie-hyung!” Dae-Eun shouted as his body came crashing down on top of his
Hyung.
“I will kill you!” Min-Joon said breathlessly as Dae-Eun laughed and wriggled
his body against him.
Min-Joon lifted to retaliate but Dae-Eun was faster. The younger hopped off
him, still in a fit of laughter.
Min-Joon sat up, rubbed his face and ran his hands through his disheveled hair.
He looked over at Dae-Eun who was still standing in the doorway, dressed for
school.
“I’m up, so get out!” Min-Joon said as he tossed a pillow at his brother. He
dodged it with a look of shock on his face. And then slowly a mischievous smile
turned up his lips.
“APPA!” Dae-Eun yelled.
Min-Joon put his hands out to hush him. He knew that Hoseok-appa hated when
they fought and Dae-Eun knew this. He used it to his advantage as often as he
could. “No! Please—”
“JOONIE-HYUNG—”
Min-Joon hopped out of bed and hurried over to Dae-Eun, placing his hand over
his mouth nearly knocking him over.
Dae-Eun’s eyes grew wide and Min-Joon began to worry if he had hurt him so he
moved his hand away. Slowly.
“Hyung?!”
Dae-Eun’s eyes went south and Min-Joon remembered that he had gone to bed
completely nude last night.
“Shit!” he swore as he covered himself as best he could with his hands.
Dae-Eun face went completely flushed as he ran from the room screaming.
Min-Joon sucked his teeth in a mixture of embarrassment and anger as he reached
to close his door.
“Next time, stay out of my room!!!!!” he yelled to a still screaming Dae-Eun as
he slammed the door shut.

Min-Joon entered the great dining room and it was in full bustle.
Hee-Young, his sister, Mina and Mi-Sun, his cousins sat together the three
giggling at what looked like a love letter that was given to Hee-Young. Soo-Mi,
his cousin as well and his youngest sister, Jae-Eun were huddled together
trying to finish homework that he was certain wasn’t finished the night before
because the two were probably up last night listening to those scary radio
programs. Tae-Min and Dae-Eun were sitting together. Tae-Min rambling on about
a test they had later as Dae-Eun kept his head down, his face rosy from
embarrassment.
His father, Hoseok was helping one of the many servants serve the eight
children as everyone seemed to have varying requests when it came to their
morning meals. His other father, Yoongi, his uncle Taehyung and his grandfather
Namjoon were huddled around some documents near the large table closest to the
entrance.
“Good morning!”
“Good morning! Everyone said in unison not halting their tasks as they returned
the greeting.
Min-Joon made his way towards the table, Yoongi patting him on the back as he
passed. He walked over to Hee-Young, Mina and Mi-Sun and snatched the letter
from Hee-Young’s grasp.
“Oppa!” Hee-Young whined as she folded her arms while the other two moaned
disappointedly.
Min-Joon continued down the table and stopped in between Soo-Mi and Jae-Eun.
“No radio for two weeks.” He whispered. Both girls groaned and put their heads
down in defeat.
He made his way over to Tae-Min who was still looking over his notes
worriedly. He sensed his approach and looked up with a smile. “Joon-Hyung!”
Min-Joon offered him a nod and walked past him, Dae-Eun now pretending to be
completely engrossed in the food Hoseok-Appa had given him.
Min-Joon bumped the back of his chair and stole a piece of meat from his plate.
“Hey!” Dae-Eun protested garnering their father’s attention.
“Joonie! How many times do I have to tell you to not tease your brother?”
Min-Joon lifted his hands with a smile and went over to his father, placing a
kiss on his cheek before finding his seat.
“Sorry everyone!” Jimin said as he entered the dining room hastily. “I
overslept.” He went over to Taehyung and kissed his cheek. “Why didn’t you wake
me?” Jimin tried to whisper.
Taehyung smiled. “You seemed like you needed a few extra minutes.”
Jimin blushed and their children all expressed openly their disgust at their
parents display as the other Kim children giggled at what their uncles were
implying.
“Alright you two!” Hoseok aimed at the two canoodling adults. “Let’s keep our
breakfast child appropriate.”
“Sorry Hyung.” Jimin said as he took his seat.
“Yeah, sorry Seon-bae-nim.” Taehyung teased.
Hoseok gave Taehyung a look that caused the younger prince to slink into his
seat.
The dining room erupted in laughter as they watched Taehyung humbly begin
eating after seemingly triggering the King.
Min-Joon shook his head with a smile as he turned to eat his own food. He
halted when his eyes fell on Dae-Eun. His embarrassment gone, he and Tae-min
were still laughing at Taehyung’s expense.
Dae-Eun must’ve felt him staring because his eyes met his. Min-Joon looked down
at his plate and started eating.

Min-Joon has his head buried in a book as he walked behind an overly cheerful
and loud Dae-Eun who was singing and dancing around Tae-Min who encouraged his
antics with his bubbly laughter.
Min-Joon sighed as he stuffed his book in his satchel and increased his pace to
catch up with the two. He walked past Dae-Eun and smacked him on the back of
his head.
“Ow!” Dae-Eun exclaimed as he rubbed the back of his head. “What was that
for?!”
Min-Joon turned with a sigh to address his younger brother. “Because you’re
being too noisy, and we are always late because of you.”
The elder of the three turned and continued down the path.
“I think Joonie-hyung got up on the wrong side of the bed.” Tae-min tried to
whisper but failed miserably.
“Shhh. Please. Let’s not talk about getting up or bed.” Dae-Eun begged.
Seemingly remembering their incident from this morning.
Min-Joon rolled his eyes. “I swear, if you two don’t come along—”
The two burst into a sprint nearly knocking Min-Joon over as they passed. The
two clasped hands and began skipping and singing the song that Dae-Eun was
singing earlier but much quieter as to poke fun at Min-Joon.
Min-Joon shook his head and followed the cause of his annoyance down the path
to school.
He watched as the two laughed and played happily. His vision mostly focused on
Dae-Eun.
When did he become so pretty?
This was something he had been pondering over for the past six of months. He
wasn’t sure what had gotten into him. But lately, he found the simplest things
about Dae-Eun attractive.
Like the way that his dark hair swayed in the wind. In his mind it seemed as if
it was orchestrating some sort of symphony only he was in tuned to.
Or, the way his brown eyes seemed to sparkle whenever they made eye contact.
Just the thought of Dae-Eun’s beautiful eyes set his heart beat into overdrive,
and that laugh. It tickled him even when he wasn’t sure what the joke was.
Min-Joon looked away. He knew what he was feeling could become problematic.
They were siblings after all. Not biologically but they were raised as
brothers. He didn’t want to imagine the outcome if he acted on his urge to
touch that wind tossed hair whenever he was near or stare without inhibition
into his brown pools to his soul or even give in to the urge to touch him and
not in a brotherly way.
He was certain that Hoseok-Appa would send him away and he couldn’t fathom
being away from his family. He just prayed that this was all hormonal and would
diminish in time. But it had been six months and how he felt didn’t seem like
it was relenting one bit.

“Oppa!”
“Yunnie!” Dae-Eun chirped happily in response.
Min-Joon looked up to see Yuna, Dae-Eun’s best friend running towards him.
Min-Joon picked up his pace to catch up with Dae-Eun before Yuna could get her
paws on him.
“Excuse us.” Min-Joon said as he grabbed Dae-Eun’s arm and dragged him through
the schoolyard’s gate.
“Yah!” Yuna yelled garnering a collective gasp from their classmates that were
entering or hanging out near the entrance.
Min-Joon turned towards Yuna, pulling Dae-Eun at his side. He stopped in front
of Yuna who had her nose high in defiance.
“Did you just speak informally to me?”
Yuna cocked her head to the side before speaking. “I did. Why should I respect
you when you are always so mean to me and Dae-Eun?”
Min-Joon felt his grip tighten on Dae-Eun’s wrist in anger. “Hyung!” Dae-Eun
whined. Min-Joon ignored it.
“It’s Dae Eun-gun to you. He isn’t your Oppa.” Min-Joon emphasized through
clenched teeth.
Yuna opened her mouth to counter but Dae-Eun shook his head vigorously to
discourage her Yuna instead smiled and let out a small laugh. She then gripped
the hem of her skirt and bowed dramatically before them.
Min-Joon turned, still pulling at Dae-Eun as Tae-min trailed behind.
“Hyung!” Dae-Eun whined.
Min-Joon turned towards him angrily. “What?!”
“You’re hurting me.”
Min Joon released him and Dae-Eun stood before him with tears in his eyes as he
rubbed his wrist. He noticed the slight bruise that began to turn his pale
skin. He opened his mouth to apologize but he caught a glimpse of Yuna as she
walked into a classroom down the hall.
His eyes went back to Dae-Eun. “Stay away from Yuna. She’s nothing but
trouble.”
“But, she’s my friend!”
Min-Joon approached Dae-Eun with wide eyes. “Your friend?!” he scoffed. “Is
this the same friend that let you take the blame for cheating on your finals
last year?”
Dae-Eun looked away.
“Is this the same friend that talked you into hitching a ride to the boarder to
meet her “boyfriend” to only leave you while she and a soldier did God’s knows
what?!”
“Hyung!” Dae-Eun continued to whine.
“If I remember correctly, it was Hobi-appa’s birthday and we both missed it
because I was out searching for you!”
That particular incident really struck a cord with Min-Joon. He had taken the
blame for their absence. Making up a lie about the two meeting up with some
friends and losing track of time. And as Min-Joon expected, he received the
brunt of the punishment because he was the oldest. He was grounded for a month
and had to come to grips with the sadness and disappointment that seemed to
fill his Hobi-appa’s eyes whenever he looked at him. It was a tough month and
not just because of the punishment. He never wanted to do anything to garner
those emotions again.
“She didn’t mean it! She apologized!”
“Apologized?!” Min-Joon asked with an incredulous tone. “What if you were
expelled from school?! What if you had been hurt or worse?! Would an apology
still be sufficient?!”
Dae-Eun began to sob as Tae-min did his best to comfort him. “Why are you like
this Hyung?” he hiccupped. “What did she ever do to you?!”
Min-Joon couldn’t believe how naïve Dae-Eun was. It was so infuriating!
It was only a matter of time before Yuna put Dae-Eun in a situation Min-Joon
couldn’t remedy. Dae-Eun was too blinded to see that, and Min-Joon had had
enough.
“You know what—” he exhaled and shook his head before continuing. “Do what you
want from now on. I don’t want any parts of it.”
And with that, Min-Joon continued down the hall earning stares as he passed
those that were spectating.

Dae-Eun stared down at his wrists as the teacher droned on about something
regarding the history of dance. He couldn’t focus. He was still upset about
what Min-Joon said.
Why was he so short lately? He seemed to explode with anger under the smallest
incidents.
Of course, Yuna had her undesirable ways but she was still a good friend of his
and was fun to be around. He remembered when Min-Joon was fun to be around. But
now those days had been replaced with hours of scolding in between being
ignored or glared at.
“Are you okay, Oppa?”
Dae-Eun looked up and there was Yuna taking her seat beside him.
“Yuna-ssi, you’re late!”
Both their eyes went to the teacher. Yuna came to her feet and bowed
apologetically.
“Please excuse me.”
Yuna took her seat and the teacher shook his head before continuing with the
lecture.
Yuna turned back to Dae-Eun in concern.
“I’m fine.”
“I’m sorry for causing more trouble but Joonie-Oppa makes me so angry with how
he treats you.” Yuna said as she pulled a notebook from her back pack.
“It’s okay and don’t be angry at him. He just wants to protect me.”
Yuna scoffed. ‘Protect you from what? You are the crowned prince. No one would
dare lay a finger on you.”
“You don’t know that?” Dae-Eun said in an attempt to defend Min-Joon’s
reasoning. When in actuality, he really wasn’t sure if that was the case.
Yuna began to outright laugh. “You don’t see it?!”
“See what?” he honestly didn’t know what Yuna was getting at.
“Joonie-Oppa is jealous of you!”
Min-Joon jealous of him? But why? That didn’t make sense at all.
“You are losing your mind, Yuna.”
Yuna turned to him excitedly to explain. “No really! I know you don’t like
talking about it, but Min-Joon is adopted.

Dae-Eun immediately became uninterested in what Yuna was saying at that moment
because Hobi-appa and Yoongi-appa treated them all the same. There would be no
reason for Min-Joon to feel jealous. Especially not of Dae-Eun. However, Yuna
continued.
“In truth, you are the next in line to the throne. Since your parents haven’t
decided who would be the next King, that puts you and Joonie head to head.”
What Yuna was asserting, Dae-Eun would’ve never considered it but the more he
sat there and thought about it, they were getting older and his parents would
need to decide soon.
“Well, if that’s the case then I will step aside.”
“What?! Are you mad?!” Yuna shouted causing an audience. One of them, the
teacher.
“Lee Yuna-ssi!”
Yuna’s eyes snapped forward at the sternness in the teacher’s tone.
“Would you like to have a visit with the headmaster?”
Yuna shook her head vigorously before coming to her feet and bowing
apologetically. “Please excuse me seongsaeng-nim.”
Yuna took her seat and leaned over to Dae-Eun. “You don’t just give up the
throne! You have a duty to your providence. What you’re suggesting is unheard
of!” She whispered harshly.
Dae-Eun sat back in his seat with a heavy sigh. What Yuna said was correct. No
one had ever just walked away from a position of that caliber. Even his father,
Yoongi, took his place eventually after a short hiatus. The eldest born Kim has
always sat at the throne. It had been that way for over five hundred years. If
his parents chose him, he would really have no choice.

Dae-Eun sat against the tall mirrors in the dance studio with sweat pouring
down his face. He had just finished his section of the dance for his exam and
was watching Yuna complete hers.
He was starving. He just couldn’t bring himself to eat when lunch time arrived.
Usually by then, any arguments between he and Min-Joon would be forgotten but
neither Min-Joon or Tae-Min came to lunch that afternoon. After waiting a while
and listening to Yuna ramble on about her boyfriend, he eventually just tossed
his lunch in the garbage.
“Dae Eun-gun?”
Dae-Eun was in so much of a daze he didn’t see the sophomore standing before
him.
Dae-Eun looked up and was met with a shy smile. His eyes then went to the white
box he was holding in his grasp. It was wrapped in a pink bow. Dae-Eun’s
favorite color. Dae-Eun tried to wrap his mind around what this was but before
he could, the sophomore started speaking again.
“M-my name is Song Dong-sun.” he said nervously. His hands now trembling around
the small package.
Dae-Eun didn’t really need an introduction. He knew who he was. He had seen him
at court a few times with his mother who was a lady of the court and not to
mention that Dong-sun was a star student and great actor. He had made lead
three out of five times at their art school. Something a student of his age had
never accomplished.
“The spring ball is in a few months, a-and I wanted to know if you would like
to go with me?”
Dae-Eun eyes widened and Dong-Sun extended the small package to him. Dae-Eun
reached out and took it, his eyes still not believing what was happening. He
was sixteen and no one had ever asked him on a date before. No one was ever
brave enough to approach. Which was why he only had one friend outside his
cousins and siblings, Yuna.
“I really like you, Dae Eun-gun. I-I hope I am not being too forward?”
Dae-Eun eyes fell on the box. It had a little tag that read his name with small
hearts around it. He looked back up at the sophomore and he realized he hadn’t
replied. Dong-sun stood above him awaiting his answer nervously.
Dae-Eun was speechless. It wasn’t like Dong-sun wasn’t handsome. He was. He had
a thin athletic build, soft jawline, large eyes and the perfect pair of pouty
lips.
Dae-Eun shook his head at his last thought. He could feel his cheeks burn from
a blush.
“No?”
Dae-Eun looked up at Dong-Sun. His expression no longer hopeful.
“Oh no! I mean—Yes! We can go together.”
Dong-Sun drew his bottom lip between his teeth to smother a smile. He bowed
before Dae-Eun who ducked his head respectfully in return.
“Please enjoy the cookies I prepared, Dae Eun-gun.”
Dae-Eun nodded with an amused smile. Dong-sun was so cute and slightly awkward.
Dae-Eun could only imagine that he would be the same if he tried to confess to
someone he liked.
“You can call me Hyung.”
Dong-sun looked completely surprised by the request, but it wasn’t like they
were strangers. They had known each other for two years and were in the same
plays together. He danced, and Dong-sun acted so they didn’t interact much but
they still were friendly to one another when their paths crossed.
“O-okay.” Dong-sun bowed again. “H-hyung.”
Dong-sun righted himself and quickly scurried off, giving Dae-Eun a nervous
wave as he disappeared into the hall.
Dae-Eun laughed and marveled at how cute Dong-sun was.
“What’s this?!” Yuna said snatching the box from Dae-Eun’s grasp and opening
it.
“Yah!” Dae-Eun protested as Yuna took a bite out of one of the cookies. Dae-Eun
snatched the box away.
“These are mine!”
Yuna pouted. “How come no one ever gives me cookies?!”
Dae-Eun smirked as he took a bite from one of the cookies. They were tasty.
“Because you are the one that usually gives up the cookies.”
Yuna gasped at Dae-Eun’s innuendo. “You asshole!” she laughed before she
attacked Dae-Eun, tickling his sides.
“I deserve another cookie for that remark!” Yuna said as she reached for
another cookie. Dae-Eun lifted one from the box and placed it into her mouth
and Yuna returned the favor as the two exaggerated with cries of happiness of
how good the cookies were.

Min-Joon watched from the doorway of the dance studio with a piece of
strawberry cake in his hand. He had skipped out on lunch to go to the bakery.
He felt bad about how he treated Dae-Eun that morning. That type of argument
should not had been held in public and he knew how sensitive Dae-Eun was but
allowed his anger at the situation get the best of him. He knew that strawberry
cake was his favorite mainly because it was pink. But, what Min-Joon saw as he
stood in that doorway reignited that anger inside of him and it was fueled by
jealousy. A feeling he refused to acknowledge when it came to Dae-Eun. He had
no claim over him. They were siblings after all but that didn’t stop the
feeling from festering.
Dong-sun bowed awkwardly as he passed. Min-Joon just looked down at him with a
slight sneer on his lips. The sophomore hurried off to his destination, not
giving Min-Joon a second glance.
Min-Joon’s eyes turned back to Dae-Eun who was now eating the contents of the
package that Dong-sun used to confess with while playing with Yuna.
He looked down at the cake in his hand and then back up at Dae-Eun who was
smiling so happily. It looked like he had underestimated the situation. Dae-Eun
was doing just fine. Without him.
That was what he wanted. Right?

Dae-Eun walked slightly behind Tae-min and Min-Joon. His nose in a book as
always as Tae-min babbled on about how well he did on his test that afternoon.
Min-Joon nodded and hummed his acknowledgement when appropriate, still staring
into that book.
Dae-Eun kicked at a rock on the road as he dragged his satchel along the
ground.
That stupid book was getting more attention than him. Dae-Eun knew it wasn’t
very logical for him to be angry or jealous of an inanimate object but he was.
Min-Joon had always been a book worm, he read books far beyond Dae-Eun’s
understanding and was fluent in English which Dae-Eun was still working on.
All that aside, in the past, Min-Joon had always made time for him. Whether it
be a ruffle of his hair, wrestling with him in the wildflower field, trying to
learn his dances (which he failed miserably at) or just napping in each other’s
arms.
Dae-Eun finally realized that it was the past. Things had changed and Yuna’s
theory about Min-Joon’s change in attitude over the past six months, made what
she suggested plausible.
He didn’t care about a title. He just wanted his brother back.

Dae-Eun stood outside of his father’s study as he and his grandfather spoke
quietly inside.
“There has been an influx of violence in this part of the providence. Three
sexual assaults and two of which resulted in murder.” He heard his grandfather
report.
His father, Yoongi clicked his tongue. “We should increase the guard here until
we find out who is behind these crimes.”
His grandfather shook his head in agreement. Dae-Eun softly knocked on the door
once he heard that their conversation had ended.
“Appa? Halabeoji?”
The two looked up at Dae-Eun from their paperwork. They both smiled and Dae-Eun
bowed before entering.
Namjoon wrapped his arm around him and hugged him from the side. Dae-Eun smiled
up at him and then looked at his father.
“Yes?” Yoongi said as he studied Dae-Eun’s face.
Dae-Eun wasn’t sure how to present this without possibly angering his father
and grandfather but he had to do it. He wanted to make things easier for his
Hyung and he thought stepping aside before it became a battle would be best.
“I want to secede from being considered for the next in line to the throne.”
“What?!” His father questioned.
His grandfather slowly removed his arm from Dae-Eun’s shoulders. “Well, it
seems you two have a lot to talk about.” He gave Dae-Eun a pat on his back
before leaving.
“Why?” Yoongi questioned more gently.
Dae-Eun couldn’t reveal his reason it would be at the expense that he would be
angry with Min-Joon or assume he coerced him to do this when in all actuality,
he had no idea.
Tears began to fall from Dae-Eun’s eyes and Yoongi pulled him into his embrace.
“Dae-Dae why are you like this suddenly? Did something happen?” Dae-Eun shook
his head and Yoongi continued to comfort him. “I know being King one day can be
scary but that’s a long way off from now and Dae-Eun…” His father lifted his
head and wiped at his eyes. “This isn’t a decision for you to make. It’s up to
Hobi-appa and myself.” Dae-Eun looked down sadly. “We have always allowed you
all to live your lives freely but there are still traditions we must uphold. Do
you understand?”
Dae-Eun nodded as Yoongi ruffled his hair.
“So, cheer up. You still have many years to go before we make our decision and
believe me, you have nothing to worry about.” Yoongi said with a smile.
Dae-Eun forced a smile and Yoongi kissed his forehead before sending him on his
way.

The dining hall was lively as always. It was dinner time. The families had
congregated once again as per their twice a day ritual. Even his aunt, Ji Yeon
and her family had joined them.
Everyone was laughing and talking about their day as they enjoyed the special
dinner that Hoseok and Jimin had prepared. Everyone except Dae-Eun and Min-
Joon. Min-Joon was still diligently reading his book and Dae-Eun was angrily
stabbing at his vegetables.
“Honey, I think the vegetables are already dead.” Hoseok said as he passed to
give Jae-Eun another serving.
Dae-Eun looked down at his plate and then up to where Min-Joon was sitting. He
had looked away the moment their eyes met.
Dae-Eun pouted and began stabbing his vegetables again.
 “Look who’s here!”
All eyes turned to the entrance of the hall and there stood Seokjin and Hana.
Everyone came to their feet to greet them excitedly. Hana had decided to study
abroad in America. She was returning after being away for nearly a year.
Hana was incredibly smart and was already in her second year of University at
the age of seventeen. She was studying to be a doctor which made both of her
fathers and the family incredibly proud.
Seokjin had gone early that morning to greet her at the docks, which explained
his absence at breakfast.
“Oh my goodness! You all have grown so much!” Hana said as she hugged all of
the children. She then came to Dae-Eun, her eyes wide and a huge smile on her
face. “When did you become so handsome?!” They embraced, and she pulled back
cradling the sides of his face. “And this hair! You’ve let it grow out?”
Dae-Eun nodded as Hana ran her hands through his shoulder length locks.
“He won’t let me cut it!” Hoseok complained.
Dae-Eun smiled at his father’s irritation as Hana turned him to face her. Her
eyes warm and full of adoration. “Don’t. It makes you look so pretty.”
Dae-Eun blushed and stepped aside so that someone else could greet her. It was
Min-Joon’s turn and Dae-Eun expected it to be a very bland greeting since he
seemed to be in a funk as of late but to his surprise it was anything but.
“OH MY GOD! JOONIE!!!!”
Min-Joon hugged Hana enthusiastically lifting her in the air causing her to
giggle. “Wow! You’ve gotten stronger and even more handsome?” He let her back
down on her feet and they hugged normally.
“I missed you so much, Noona.”
They called Hana noona or unnie because she was so close to their ages and it
would be awkward to address her as aunt.
Dae-Eun folded his arms with a pout. Yeah, the two were close before she left
because of the closeness of their ages but why did Hana get such a greeting
when all he ever got lately, were glares?

They had all settled back down to eat dinner again after everyone had calmed.
Hana had taken a seat next to Min-Joon and the two was chatting happily. Mostly
in English which Dae-Eun barely understood. He watched as Min-Joon served Hana
and Hana would thank him with a pinch on the cheek.
The more Dae-Eun watched the exchange, the angrier he became. He was jealous,
and he knew he had no right to be since Hana-noona had been gone for so long.
Its completely normal for everyone to miss her but what he couldn’t comprehend
is how he could be so nice to Hana and so mean to him.
Dae-Eun came to his feet and bowed. “Please excuse me.”
Everyone stopped eating and turned their attention to a standing Dae-Eun.
“But you barely ate anything?” Hoseok stated as he observed his barely touched
plate of food.
“I’m not hungry.” Dae-Eun said as he left the table without being properly
excused.
“Dae-Eun—” Yoongi began getting up from his seat. Hoseok stopped him and nodded
towards Hana. She got up and went after him.

“What’s with him lately?” Min-Joon heard Hoseok whisper to Yoongi.
“I don’t know but whatever it is it seems to be something serious.”
Min-Joon kept his eyes down on his plate.
It was him. This was all his fault because he couldn’t deal with his emotions.
Because he had allowed the brotherhood between them to blossom into something
that couldn’t be reciprocated. He was expelling his anger out on Dae-Eun, but
he couldn’t help it and unfortunately, he had no one to help him through it.
“Maybe, I should talk to him?” Hoseok said coming to his feet. Yoongi stopped
him.
“Let’s let Hana deal with it for now. If it persists, then we’ll have a talk
with him.”
Hoseok agreed hesitantly and it ate Min-Joon up that he was the underlying
cause of his father’s worry. He would have to do better in the future.

“Dae-ah!”
Dae-Eun heard Hana call out to him before she grabbed his arm and spun him
around. She looked so worried. He hated that he was angry with someone who
genuinely cared for him. Well, he wasn’t angry but jealous.
“What is it? Everyone seems worried.”
Dae-Eun’s eyes filled with tears and Hana pulled him in for a hug. “Don’t cry,
Dae-ah. You can tell Noona anything.” She pulled away and caressed his hair as
he wiped his eyes. “Do you want to talk about it?”
He did but knew that again, it would make people get the wrong idea about Min-
Joon, so he just shook his head pitifully.
“It’s okay.” she soothed. “We can talk when you’re ready.”
Dae-Eun nodded and they embraced once more.
“We’re all going to the ballroom to listen to Hee-Young play. Come when you
feel better?”
Dae-Eun nodded and they disengaged, Hana making her way back to the dining
hall.

Two hours later, Dae-Eun awoke to the muted sound of piano music wafting into
his room. It was Hee-Young. He could tell the difference from her and their
father, Yoongi. His appa, Hoseok couldn’t however. Hoseok said he had a gift
when it came to music and that was why he was such a wonderful dancer.
Dae-Eun got out of bed, still dressed and made his way to the ballroom. He
stood in the doorway and looked around as the whole family had made a huge
pallet out of pillows on the floor and everyone sat or laid around listening as
Hee-Young played.
Most were asleep, especially the younger children. His father, Hoseok had his
head in Yoongi’s lap fast asleep as Yoongi stroked his hair.
Dae-Eun continued to scan the room and his eyes fell on Min-Joon who was
sitting up reading his little book as Hana was fast asleep with her head in his
lap.
Min-Joon looked up briefly and then went back to his book.
That was where Dae-Eun usually laid as they listened to Hee-Young play. Dae-Eun
sighed and went over to where Mina and Tae-Min where sleeping. He laid down and
cuddled up close to Tae-min who turned and wrapped his arms around him.
He closed his eyes and allowed the gentle music lure him back into dreamland.

Min-Joon lowered his book. The hall now completely quiet. Everyone was fast
asleep except him. His eyes immediately went to where Dae-Eun was sleeping. He
removed Hana from his lap gently and placed her head onto a pillow. He walked
over to Dae-Eun who was still wrapped in Tae-min’s embrace.
He smiled at how innocent he looked sleeping like this. How it reminded him of
their childhood. Simpler times.
Min-Joon squatted and tucked wayward strands of hair behind Dae-Eun’s ear. He
really liked his hair long like this.
“If I could write the beauty of your eyes, and in fresh numbers number all your
graces,
The age to come would say, “This poet lies: such beauty ne’er touched earthly
faces.”
Min-Joon smiled as those words left his lips. It was as if Shakespeare had
written those words with Dae-Eun in mind. It described how he saw the younger
perfectly!
Sadly, this would be the only time he would be able to openly utter those words
without questions he wasn’t ready to answer arising.
This was his confession. A confession only meant for his ears. It was his way
of releasing the pressure surrounding his heart whenever he looked at him.
Well, at least he thought it was for his ears only. Because unbeknownst to him,
someone indeed had heard his quiet confession and the smile that spread across
their face had to be stifled by the softness of the pillow he had placed under
their head.

Chapter two: Sonnet 60
Like as the waves, make towards the pebbled shore,
So do our minutes hasten to their end;
In sequent toil all forwards do contend.

Min-Joon heard the floorboards creak. The footfalls unmistakably Dae-Eun’s. it
had been ages since they had slept together. He wondered what brought about
this bold act. He decided he didn’t care. Dae-Eun was walking into a dangerous
situation by coming there.
“Go to bed Dae-Eun.” Min-Joon said without turning over to address him
properly.
“Not until you tell me why you are angry with me…” Dae-Eun asked as he choked
on his words. “…and why are you ignoring me?!”
Min-Joon closed his eyes as he spoke. Resigned not to allow himself to get
overly emotional even though his brother was igniting a fire he was sure that
would consume them both if he continued.
“I’m not angry with you so go to bed!” he warned. It may not had sounded like a
warning to Dae-Eun but Min-Joon was sure he needed to leave now, or things
would escalate.
“Then why are you ignoring me?!” Dae-Eun sobbed. “Is it because of the crown?!”
Min-Joon’s eyes snapped open.
“If it is…” Dae-Eun hiccupped. “…I don’t want it! You can have it! Just stop
being angry with me!”
That was it. He had finally lit the spark and Min-Joon was beyond reproach to
smother it.
Min-Joon hopped out from his bed and grabbed Dae-Eun roughly by the shoulders.
“You think this is about a stupid crown?!”
Dae-Eun continued to sob and it angered Min-Joon that Dae-Eun thought so lowly
of him that he would fight with him over a stupid crown. A title he cared
nothing about. Couldn’t he see that what was happening between them ran much
deeper? Was he that fucking clueless?!
“Then what is it Hyung?!” Dae-Eun cried, his shoulders shaking with grief. “I
just want you to like me again!”
Like…
Min-Joon’s heart began to race as his watched his dongsaeng break down before
him.
Like…
Without much thought, Min-Joon captured Dae-Eun’s lips with his own. Dae-Eun
froze but didn’t fight, his arms stiff at his sides. Min Joon deepened the
kiss, suckling on his lips. Lips, he had only kissed in his dreams. Lips, that
he had only imagined would be just as soft and supple as they were in real
life.
Min-Joon released him and cupped his face that was still dazed, and his pupils
dilated from shock.
“You should’ve left when I told you Dae-Eunie.” Min-Joon said using the
nickname he hadn’t used for his brother in ages as he kissed him again this
time working his tongue past those kiss swollen lips.
Dae-Eun’s stiff body grew plaint as their tongues danced and caressed the
other. His hands then went to Min-Joon’s back, gripping at his tunic.
Min-Joon released him so he could breathe.
“Hyung?” Dae-Eun whispered breathlessly.
Min-Joon ran his fingers across his lips and regarded his shining eyes. “I
don’t like you Dae-Eun. I love you. I love you so much!”
“Hyung!” Dae-Eun breathed before Min Joon captured his mouth once again. Min-
Joon pressed him against the closed door, prying his hands from his tunic and
placing them against the door palm up near his head.
Min-Joon released his lips and worked his way down his body. Dae-Eun watched
him, his chest heaving from the passionate kisses they had shared.
Min-Joon lowered Dae-Eun’s pajama bottoms and was happily surprised at what he
saw. It seemed he wasn’t the only one aroused.
Min-Joon stayed true to himself and kept his approach as he had started.
Without thought. He knew if he thought too much none of this would be
happening.
He took Dae-Eun into his mouth, opening his throat to take him in completely.
“Hyung!” Dae-Eun moaned and Min-Joon felt him twitch inside of his mouth.
He released him slowly and looked up at him from his crouched position. The
younger was already completely ruined. His hair curtaining his face as he
watched his Hyung in utter shock but there was also ecstasy there. Min-Joon
watched as Dae-Eun lost what little fight he had left and allow his body to
give way to what he was feeling. It was such a subtle act but beautiful. Dae-
Eun head went back against the door with a soft thud as a strangled moan
escaped his lips.
Min-Joon began working his mouth faster on Dae-Eun’s length. Dae-Eun had become
a moaning mess and it was so sexy and beautiful. Min-Joon was sure he would
come just from the sight of his release.
‘Hyung!” Dae-Eun panted. “Hyung, I—”
Min-Joon worked his mouth faster trying desperately to push the younger over
the edge and it worked. Dae-Eun gripped Min-Joon’s hair as his legs gave way
and he finally climaxed. He collapsed, holding himself up by gripping Min-
Joon’s hair.
He released him slowly. Allowing his cock to slip noisily from between his
lips. Min-Joon pulled away and Dae-Eun slid down onto the floor. His eyes
closed and his breathing sporadic just like Min-Joon’s heart rate.
Min-Joon looked down at the front of his pajamas. A stain from his own passion
making the garment stick to his lap.
He reached over and tucked Dae-Eun’s damp hair behind his ear. Dae-Eun’s eyes
blinked open lazily. His eyes seemed like they were seeing him for the first
time. He could finally see the love he had for Dae-Eun reflecting in them.
“I mean it Dae-Eunie, I love you.”
Dae-Eun didn’t respond and Min-Joon was okay with that. His eyes had already
told him enough. He reached over and scooped him up in his arms and carried him
over to his bed., tucking the covers around him. Dae-Eun almost immediately
closed his eyes and fell asleep. Min-Joon smiled and bent to kiss Dae-Eun once
more before making his way back towards the door to go get cleaned up.
“I love you too, Hyung.”
Min-Joon smiled as he opened the door and left the room.

“Are you feverous?” Hoseok said as he placed a hand over Dae-Eun’s forehead.
Dae-Eun had been beet red since breakfast began and Min-Joon was the only
person that knew the cause.
“Appa!” Dae-Eun whined and Min-Joon couldn’t help but hide his smile behind his
book.
“Oppa”, leave him be. You’re embarrassing him.” Hana interjected.
Hoseok sighed and took his seat by his husband who kissed him reassuringly and
fed him some of his food with his chopsticks.
Dae-Eun began eating and Min-Joon couldn’t help but steal glances at him from
over his book. He looked so adorable with that blush tinting his pale skin.
Hana said something next to him, but he was too transfixed to make it out.
“Yes, Noona?”
“Nothing!” she said as she continued eating with a smile.
Min-Joon shrugged and began eating himself.

“I really want Hobi-samchon to make bibimbap tonight.” Tae-min said as he
rubbed his stomach hungrily while they were walking home from school.
Min-Joon and Dae-Eun both laughed as the three-walked side by side down the
path away from school. They all knew it was one of Tae-min’s favorites. It was
all of their favorites to be quite honest but Hobi-appa only made the dish on
special occasions and since he had cooked a big feast last night for the
family, they doubted it would be another like that from their father anytime
soon.
“Keep wanting and perhaps it will come true.” Min-Joon teased sending Dae-Eun
in another fit of laughter.
Tae-min looked down in disappointment.
“Aww cheer up Tae-Tae. Why don’t you cook it yourself?” Dae-Eun suggested.
This time, it was Min-Joon that went into hysterics. “Only if you have a death
wish! We all know that Jin-Halabeoji oversees the kitchens now. Appa was only
able to use it because he had gone to meet Hana-noona!”
Dae-Eun joined in on the laughter as Tae-min continued to sulk.
While Tae-min was distracted, Min-Joon entangled his hand with Dae-Eun’s.
Dae-Eun looked at him a blush finding its way back to his cheeks.
“Oppa!”
Dae-Eun turned away from Min-Joon and saw Yuna waving him over. Dae-Eun waved
back. he hadn’t seen his friend all day. He took a step to go greet her when he
was halted by Min-Joon.
He turned to him in confusion. There wasn’t an exchange of words but Dae-Eun
watched his expression soften and his grip loosen on his hand until he fully
released him.
“I’ll be right back.” Dae-Eun reassured him before running over to meet Yuna.
“Oppa!” Yuna said excitedly. “You have to go with me to this party tonight!”
“Yuna!” Dae-Eun complained. Yuna knew that Dae-Eun wasn’t allowed out
unchaperoned at night. It was no way he would be allowed to go to a party. “You
know I can’t!”
“Please Oppa!” she begged. “Don’t make me go alone!”
Dae-Eun looked back at where Min-Joon and Tae-min where waiting. Min-Joon
looking especially irritated. They had finally come to grips with their
feelings and Dae-Eun realized that he loved his Hyung too. It explained his
jealousy and exaggerated distress about the whole situation. He realized it
when their lips met. Everything made sense. There was nothing left to question.
They were in a good place although they both knew there would be some obstacles
ahead. He didn’t want to do anything to mess it up.
“I don’t know Yuna.”
Yuna grabbed both of his hands. “Please Oppa! I promise it will only be fore
two hours tops. I will have you home before anyone is the wiser.”
Dae-Eun sighed. He couldn’t let her go alone. It wouldn’t be safe. It would
only be for a few hours after all.
“Okay.”
Yuna jumped up and down and Dae-Eun nervously tried to silence her. “Two hours
and that’s it. I will leave you!”
Yuna bowed dramatically and gave him a hug. “I promise. “she whispered before
skipping off.
Dae-Eun shook his head with a smile as he went back over to join his family.

“Oppa!” Min-Joon heard a soft voice whisper harshly as they tried to shake him
awake.
“Hmm?” Min-Joon said as he turned over. It was Mina and Tae-min standing near
his bed with worried looks on their faces. Min Joon reached over and turned up
his oil lamp.
“What happened?”
The twins looked at one another before Mina spoke.
“I saw, Dae-Hyung sneaking out a little while ago.”
“What?!” Min-Joon said becoming fully awake and kicking the covers off him. He
then began putting on the clothes he had discarded on the floor from earlier.
“Where was he going?”
“He said something about a party in town. He was going with Yuna and promised
to be back in two hours.” Mina continued.
“Well how long has it been?” Min-Joon asked as he slipped on his boots.
“Four hours.”
“Four Hours?!”
The twins nodded in unison.
“Shit!” Min-Joon grumbled as he fought to put on his right boot. “Why didn’t
you wake me sooner?!”
“I told you!” Tae-min said with a slight shove to his sister’s shoulders.
“I’m going.” Min-Joon said coming to his feet and hurrying to his door.
‘I’m coming with you!” Tae-Min said and Min-Joon didn’t have the energy or time
to protest. He needed to find Dae-Eun.

Dae-Eun walked down the street with heightened senses. Every noise seemed to
put him on edge.
Yuna had disappeared when he had gone to the bathroom. He was searching for her
now. The last he saw her she was dancing with some soldiers that just returned
from the front lines. He couldn’t believe she had abandoned him yet again.
With every corner he turned he realized that his Hyung was right about Yuna.
She was a horrible friend and was selfish to boot. Who would leave their friend
to their own devices when he barely knew where he was?
Dae-Eun wrapped his arms around himself. There was still a slight chill in the
spring air.
“Hey baby.”
Dae-Eun felt his heart rate spike instantaneously. He turned and there stood a
lone man, cloaked in darkness.
He shivered as he took a step back and the man a step forward, the light from
the moon illuminating his features.
Dae-Eun gasped at how disfigured his face was. A deep scar ran down his entire
face at an angle as the botched stitch job added to the disfigurement.
“Aren’t you a pretty one?!”
Dae-Eun gasped before turning on his heels and running full speed in the
opposite direction of his would-be attacker.
Tears blurred his eyes as he imagined not being able to see his family any
longer. Dying cold and alone in these deserted streets.
“Please God!” he cried as he forced his legs to move faster as the footsteps of
the man could be heard close behind. He was beginning to lose hope as he could
now hear the man breathing. That was until he saw two people standing about one
hundred yards at the top of the ascending street. He opened his mouth to call
to them, but his cries were smothered by the calloused hand of his pursuer.
He was thrown up against a wall, his head taking the brunt of the impact. He
fell to the ground, holding his spinning head. He felt moisture. He looked at
his fingers. He was bleeding.
Strong hands lifted him to his feet by his collar and he came face to face with
his worst fear.
“Now that that’s over.” the attacker breathed, his breath reeking of alcohol.
“How about we have a bit of fun.”
Dae-Eun was them tossed to the ground roughly jarring his already spinning
head.
He couldn’t focus. He tried to swing at the attacker to protect himself but at
the moment, there was three of them. His head injury causing him to see triple.
The attacker punched him rendering him completely helpless as he fought to stay
conscious.
Dae-Eun weakly tried to push the man’s hands away as he tore at his clothing.
“I’m going to fuck you so good boy!”
Dae-Eun began to sob his cries echoing through the street.
He would die right here. He knew it. There was no one here to help him. All
that ran through his mind from that moment on was the sadness this would cause
his family. All because he listened to Yuna. Yuna who was probably somewhere
safe.
Min-Joon.
He didn’t want to imagine it.
“Dae-Eun!”
He was hallucinating. He could almost here Min-Joon. It felt like he was there
but that was impossible. No one knew where he was.
“Dae-Eun!”
He heard it again and he forced his eyes opened. Through his blurred vision, he
saw two people running full speed towards them. The man stood, stumbling away
from him and began pulling at his belt.
Min-Joon tackled him before he could reach for whatever he was trying to pull
from his waist. Tae-Min came over to help him to his feet.
“Hyung!” Dae-Eun slurred as he tried to fight out of Tae-Min’s grasp to help.
The two wrestled on the ground and Dae-Eun realized what the man was pulling at
from his waist. He had a gun!
“Hyung!” Dae-Eun screamed pushing Tae-min away and then running over to the two
as they struggled with the gun.
“Dae-Hyung!” Tae-Min yelled as he jumped up to hold Dae-Eun back.
Tae-Min was now between the fight and Dae-Eun, wrestling with him to keep him
away but then the gun went off and everything stopped.
Dae-Eun’s hands flew to his mouth as everything seemed to move in slow motion.
His yes went from the two that were now motionless on the ground to Tae-min.
Tears were filling his eyes.
Dae-Eun watched as the tears fell.
“Hyung?” Tae-min gasped before collapsing at his feet.
“Tae?” Min Joon whispered as he disengaged with the now unconscious attacker.
Dae-Eun slowly dropped to his knees as blood pooled around a lifeless Tae-Min.

Dae-Eun was only slightly aware of what happened after that. He was only
slightly aware of his own screams and the cries of Min-Joon and then the
subsequent cries from Tae-Min’s parents and his own.
It seemed he stood outside of himself as he watched his uncle Taehyung rock his
child in his arms and Jimin lay faint on the ground in his Hoseok-appa’s arms.
This wasn’t happening. He begged for this to be just a nightmare that he would
wake up from. That his family hadn’t just been torn apart because of his
carelessness.
His eyes went to Min-Joon who sat on the ground completely defeated and
unfocused.
He wanted to hold him. His arms ached to embrace him, but he couldn’t. His legs
refused to move and his heart ached too much for him to find the will.

The whole family sat in the living room of a surgeon that Yoongi had found
nearby. The doctor was taken aback by the presence of the King but was more
than eager to help.
Tae-min had lost a lot of blood and his pulse was practically non-existent when
they brought him there. Hopelessness was written all over everyone’s face,
including tears.
The doctor’s wife had bandaged Dae-Eun up and gave him clothes to change into
before he joined his family. No one looked at him except his Hobi-appa that
came to ask if he was okay. He nodded and Hoseok sat next to him, holding him
close and kissing him about his head.
The door opened to where the doctor was working on Tae-min. The adults stood as
the doctor removed his mask.
“I’m sorry….”
The doctor began. He didn’t need to hear the rest. He literally felt his heart
begin to break as his sobbed and his body convulsed with grief.

Chapter Three: Sonnet 30

When to the sessions of sweet silent thought
I summon up remembrance of things past, I sigh the lack of many a thing I
sought,
And wish old woes new wail my dear time’s waste…

Seven years later

There was a gentle knock at his office door. He looked up from the papers he
was grading and beckoned the visitor inside.
“Come in.”
The door opened, and the faculty secretary peeked inside with a smile. “Sorry
to disturb you Professor Kim but you have a visitor.”
He nodded with a smile. “Can you send them in please?”
The woman shook her head politely before closing the door. The door opened
moments later, and a smile spread across his face.
“Am I disturbing you Professor Kim?” Hana said as she peeked inside.
Min-Joon came to his feet, rounded the desk as Hana fully stepped inside and
pulled her into his embrace. “What are you doing here?”
He pulled away and admired how pretty Hana had become over the past year since
he had seen her last. Her hair was shorter, and she had this glow about her.
She looked incredibly happy and Min-Joon couldn’t help but feel slightly
jealous. He hadn’t been happy in a long time. Somewhat satisfied, but not
happy.

It had been seven years since the incident that seemingly split their families
apart. Well, the adults were still holding strong but the children, namely Dae-
Eun and Min-Joon couldn’t seem to get past what happened. The others tried
desperately to stay neutral but the pain in Mina’s eyes whenever she looked at
him proved otherwise. She never outright blamed him but Min-Joon could feel it.
And then there was Dae-Eun….
Dae-Eun…
He hadn’t spoken to him since that night and any attempt to sort out what
happened died when Min-Joon returned with Hana to America. They both resided in
New York together for some time but then he had finished school and became an
Associate Professor in the English department at a University in New Hampshire.
“Joonie? Did you hear what I said?”
“Hmm?” Min-Joon hummed as he turned his attention back to Hana.
“I said, I’m getting married!”
Min-Joon’s eyes widened. “What?!” he said with and amused chuckle.
Hana held up her hand and there sat a beautiful diamond ring. Min-Joon looked
up at Hana. She had tears in her eyes and a huge goofy grin on her face. No
wonder she was so happy.
“Noona~~~” Min-Joon gushed as he admired her ring before looking into her tear-
filled eyes. “I am so happy for you!”
They embraced again as Hana cried on his shoulder. It didn’t sound like a happy
cry. He quickly noticed. Min-Joon pulled away, worried about why his Noona
seemed so upset when she should be happy.
“Noona?”
Hana wiped at her eyes, a nervous smile on her face. “I’m sorry. Its just that
I am so nervous.”
Min-Joon held her hand and escorted her over to the couch so they could talk.
“Why?” he said as they sat, and he wiped at her tears.
Hana blew out a breath and shook her head. “I’m being ridiculous, I know.” Hana
said as she took a tissue from a nearby tissue box. “But I’m afraid that
Seokjin-appa and Namjoon-appa won’t like them.”
Min-Joon smiled. She was being ridiculous. “Noona~~” Min-Joon said rubbing
circles on the back of her hands as he spoke. “Seokjin-Halabeoji and Namjoon-
Halabeoji will love them!”
Hana nodded with smile and a sniffle.
“You are over thinking this.”
Hana shook her head again in agreement. “You’re right!” Hana exhaled. “I
already wrote Seokjin-appa and he seemed excited.”
Min-Joon smiled. “See! You worry too much, Noona.”
Hana laughed. “You’re right, but can you do me a favor?”
Min-Joon nodded enthusiastically. “Sure!”
“I want you to meet them first.”
Min-Joon shrugged. “Alright.”
Hana came to her feet. Min-Joon was confused. Was she leaving already?
“Noona, what are you doing?”
“I’m going to get them. They’re outside.” She said with a bright smile.
Min-Joon came to his feet and straightened his clothes. As he mentally prepared
himself for the introduction, he began to wonder what the man that asked Hana
to marry her was like. Handsome of course. Wealthy? Maybe? Hana wasn’t very
materialistic. Smart and well cultured? Well-traveled? Probably? Hana had never
had a boyfriend in the past, so it was hard to gage what her type was, but all
in all, Min-Joon knew that whoever it was, had to be special.
Hana reentered his office, looking back out the door with an encouraging smile.
Min-Joon heard her whisper for her fiancé to not be nervous in English as she
pulled them inside.
Min-Joon cleared his throat and extended his hand to offer a polite English
greeting, but it was halted by the appearance of a woman. A very beautiful
young woman.
The young woman was dressed in a beautiful green dress that highlighted her
equally gorgeous green eyes. The caramel skin on her face was flushed,
emphasizing the freckles that littered her cheeks as her auburn hair fell in
soft curls over her shoulders and down her back. She bowed, holding out the
skirt of her dress. She came to her full height and Hana took her hand and
intertwined their fingers. The woman looked at her lovingly, a small smile
playing at her lips.
“Joonie, this is Elizabeth.” Hana beamed. “My fiancé.”
Min-Joon’s eyes widened and his jaw dropped slightly as he looked from Hana to
Elizabeth. He finally understood her apprehension. Two women? Married? This was
new. At least new to him.
Hana cleared her throat and Min-Joon’s mouth clamped shut. He bowed and reached
for Elizabeth’s hand. He placed a gentle kiss and smiled warmly up at her.
“It’s nice to meet you Elizabeth. Please forgive my rudeness. It’s just I have
never seen anyone as beautiful as you before.”
Elizabeth smiled shyly. “Thank you and it’s nice to finally meet you as well,
Mr. Kim.”
Min-Joon couldn’t help but marvel at how much Hana’s eyes seemed to glimmer as
she looked at Elizabeth. It was quite obvious she adored her. Min-Joon at that
moment decided that as long as his Noona was happy, it didn’t matter who she
loved. He would support her. He knew she would need it if she planned on
returning to Korea.

“Lieutenant Kim, sir?”
Dae-Eun turned from the map he and two of his soldiers were reviewing to the
soldier that had called out to him. He was a messenger soldier.
The soldier held up an envelope. Dae-Eun patted one of the soldiers on the
shoulder before walking over to the messenger. The messenger bowed and handed
him the envelope.
“What is it?”
“It’s a letter from America. It’s from Princess Hana-ssi.”
Dae-Eun took the letter from the messenger and thanked him politely before the
soldier hurried away. Dae-Eun stepped further away from the soldiers he was
conversing with earlier and opened the letter. He smiled as the writing seemed
to bring forth a sense of nostalgia.
It took him back to a melancholy time when worry was the last thing on his mind
and his heart and mind were at peace. After what happened to Tae-Min, his heart
had become a raging sea of emotional chaos and blame and his mind a toxic
wasteland of illogical thoughts and dysphoria. In his jaded state, he did
something his family thought was irrational and driven by emotion. He joined
the military.
His Hobi-appa was against it from the start. Begged him not to join and to be
more rational. Yoongi on the other hand was proud and thought it would teach
him character and responsibility. Despite Hoseok’s protests he agreed with his
Yoongi-appa and found that joining the military was the most logical and mature
thing he had ever done in his life.
His seven years at the borders forced him to think more rationally and
cognitively but most of all, it offered him an escape. An escape from the
nightmare he had caused his family. A nightmare he relived whenever he looked
into his family’s eyes. Of course, they said they didn’t blame him, but he held
enough blame for them all.
Despite his emotional turmoil he couldn’t help the happy tears that filled his
eyes as he read the letter and the smile that spread across his face.
“Noona is getting married.”

“Are you nervous?”
Dae-Eun looked over at the other passenger of the coach and smiled. They took
his hand in theirs and brought it to their lips.
“Don’t be. I am certain your family misses you, Hyung.”
Dae-Eun placed his other hand over Dong-Sun’s with a nod. “I know.” Dae-Eun
whispered as his eyes fell to their stacked hands.
Dong-Sun.
He was a far cry of the nervous sophomore that asked him to the spring formal
seven years prior. He had become a soldier as well but the two hadn’t crossed
each other’s paths until two years ago. The attraction wasn’t instantaneous. It
had taken time. Dae-Eun had been through a lot and even now, he still struggled
with letting Dong-Sun completely into his heart. And yet, Dong-Sun was
steadfast and refused to leave him alone. Their turning point was after a
poignant argument that resulted in Dae-Eun’s pent up emotions to flow forth
rendering him into a sobbing mess. It had obviously been the release he needed
because they had become a couple shortly after that. Even though Dae-Eun still
had his days when he would shut down, Dong-Sun was always there to help him
pick up the pieces. Because of that, he found himself beginning to fall in love
with him.
“We’re here.”
Dae-Eun looked up from their hands to the palace before him. He felt his heart
begin to pound as the coach proceeded through the gates. His family was there
to receive him. They all wore smiles and some even jumped and shouted happily
as the coach halted.
“See.” Dong-Sun whispered as he watched how excited Dae-Eun’s family seemed to
see him. “I told you there was nothing to be nervous about.”
A genuine smile spread across Dae-Eun’s face as the footman opened the door to
the cab of the coach. He exited and was immediately assaulted by a sea of hugs
and kisses from his siblings and cousins.

“Dae-Hyung!”
“Oppa!”
“You’re back!”
“We missed you!”

Dae-Eun kissed and hugged them all. His fathers hugged him tightly and
whispered their excitement of his return. Amid the excitement, his anxiety was
an afterthought until he saw Mina and her parents, Jimin and Taehyung. As he
watched the concern on Jimin and Taehyung’s faces, there was an equal amount of
concern in him about how this would play out. It was no secret that the twins
were inseparable. Extremely close. Dae-Eun knew the incident affected Mina the
most.
Everyone stood aside and just watched as the two observed each other
wordlessly. Her dark eyes glistening with unshed tears and her dark hair
blowing in the spring air as her parents stood beside her. Jimin, with his hand
on her back to comfort her.
He wasn’t sure how to approach. Should he throw himself at their feet and beg
for forgiveness? Or would it be better if he just left? He didn’t want to make
them feel uncomfortable which was part of the reason he left in the first
place.
Dae-Eun had decided to do the former but before he could open his mouth, Mina
opened hers.
“Oppa!” she cried and ran into his arms. Dae-Eun nearly fell backward from the
impact of her embrace. “I missed you so much!”
Dae-Eun slowly eased out of his shock and hugged Mina back. He was completely
overwhelmed with Mina’s compassionate gesture. He would’ve never guessed she
would accept him so easily. He was extremely touched. “I’m so sorry Mina!” Dae-
Eun sobbed into her hair.
“Shhh.” Mina pulled away. Her face soaked with her own tears. “It is and was
already forgiven.” She nodded.
Dae-Eun pulled her close again. The words were spoken but they still hadn’t
reached his heart. He wasn’t worthy of her forgiveness. Anyone’s for that
matter.
“What an example to set for your soldiers.” A person said with a click of their
tongue. “Still crying about things that no one blamed you for in the first
place.”
Dae-Eun pulled away from Mina and looked past her. There sat Tae-Min in a
wooden wheelchair, a smirk on his face. Dae-Eun couldn’t move. He just stood
there and regarded him with tear filled eyes.
 He did this to him.
He would never walk again.
He remembered it as if it were yesterday. How helpless he felt when he heard
the doctor utter those words.
He did this to him.
“So, are you going to stand there blubbering or are you going to give me a hug
too?”
Dae-Eun swallowed past the ball of nerves in his throat and moved forward. He
bent and embraced Tae-min as much as he could around the wheelchair.
“Welcome home, hyung.” Tae-min whispered.
Hyung? Dae-Eun definitely didn’t feel worthy of the title but he didn’t
protest. He held him anyway. It was the least he could do.
He lifted and Jimin and Taehyung hugged him and welcomed him home.
It seemed that everyone had forgiven him. His best friend Tae-Min, Mina and her
parents. They had expressed it long before and confimed it that day but still,
he couldn’t shake the discontent in his heart.
“Look!” someone shouted behind him. ‘It’s Hana-Unnie!”
Dae-Eun turned as the coach came to a halt.
He hadn’t seen Hana in seven years and despite the unease in his heart, he was
happy to be able to see her again.
A smile lit up Dae-Eun’s face as she exited the coach. Her nieces and nephews
barely allowed her to take two steps before they were rushing her with hugs and
kisses. Her infectious laughter echoed throughout the courtyard and caused Dae-
Eun’s smile to brighten.
Another woman exited the cab of the coach but went unnoticed by the others
because they were so busy doting on Hana. She was an extraordinarily beautiful
woman. Definitely a foreigner. Dae-Eun wasn’t aware she was bringing a friend.
He had thought only her fiancé. But then a man began to emerge from the coach
taking his mind of the woman. Dae-Eun attempted to get a glimpse of Hana’s
fiancé but his head was down so he couldn’t make him out.
“Joonie-Oppa!” His little sister Jae-Eun called.
The man’s head lifted and Dae-Eun felt his heart sink. Min-Joon?!
The source of his discontent. He realized.
Here he was dreading seeing his family, Mina and her parents the most, that he
didn’t even think about Min-Joon. How could he had forgotten? Well, they had
other family events and Min-Joon was always absent so he didn’t expect him but
that was stupid notion. Hana was getting married in a few months. Of course, he
would come. She is the first to get married out of the Kim children. Everyone
was required to attend.
Dae-Eun could feel sweat beginning to roll down his back and his stomach begin
to turn as Min-Joon excited the cab completely and embraced Jae-Eun.
He smiled at her and squeezed her cheeks and then proceeded to ruffle the
others hair and place kisses on the cheeks of the other young women in their
family.
Dae-Eun felt like he couldn’t breathe when he embraced their parents. Hoseok
cried and he could see tears in his Yoongi-appa’s eyes. As he was hugging
Yoongi, Min-Joon’s eyes fell on him and Dae-Eun felt his knees slightly buckle.
Min-Joon’s smile fell as he released their father and made his way towards him.
Dong-Sun who was quiet during this whole exchange finally spoke.
“Are you alright?”
Dae-Eun didn’t respond. His eyes on Min-Joon as he approached. He had gotten
taller. His hair longer. It now dusted his collar in loose waves. In a more
western style Dae-Eun supposed.
Min-Joon stopped a few feet away from him. Neither saying a word. Dae-Eun
watched as Min-Joon’s eyes drifted to Dong-sun who had now snaked his arm
around Dae-Eun’s waist protectively or was it possessively? Dae-Eun wasn’t
sure.
“Dongsun-hobaenim.”
Dong-Sun removed his arm and bowed respectfully but placed it back just as
quickly when he rose.
“Minjoon-gun, Welcome home.”
Min-Joon simply nodded. His lips in line and his expression unreadable. Min-
Joon’s eyes went back to Dae-Eun and still, no words were spoken.
There was no need for words because the longer he gazed at Min-Joon, the anger
and pain he had witnessed in those same beautiful eyes seven years ago,
resurfaced. He couldn’t bear it, so like a coward, he looked away.
“Hana?” Seokjin said to his daughter as he had his arm wrapped around her
garnering Dae-Eun’s attention. “Where is your fiancé?”
Dae-Eun watched as the smile that Hana had already on her lips spread even
wider as she stepped out of her father’s embrace. She went over to the woman,
who Dae-Eun realized looked extremely nervous and afraid and grabbed her hand.
Hana looked from the woman to everyone who was watching her in wonder and
confusion.
“Everyone…” Hana breathed. “…this is Elizabeth. My fiancé.”
